Photo Friday: Memories

Today I'm reminiscing...

Our trip to Switzerland in 2006 was what dreams are made of. Our week of driving around this tiny country was part of a whirlwind three-week trip incorporating London, Paris and a drive around Italy.

It was my first time to Europe, Steve's second. He had been to Switzerland before, staying with his grandmother, and was excited to be showing me around. I was a little hesitant at first - it wasn't a country I had ever thought of going to - but I was so, so, so glad he convinced me.

The Swiss are lovely, polite and hospitable people. But really, how could you be anything else when you're looking at that scenery every day? As my (Swiss) mother-in-law says: your jaw still drops when you're seeing the Alps for the hundredth time.

This photo was taken in a small town, one we hadn't planned to stop at. We were driving along when it began to snow. It became heavier and heavier and we were becoming a little nervous, so we pulled into the next town we saw. We booked into a hotel - where it was lucky Steve knows a few words in German - and went exploring.

We ended up walking along the old city wall, looking out over the rooftops covered in snow. It was magical. Especially for someone like me, who hadn't even seen snow until I was in my twenties (although, to paraphrase my mother-in-law again, Australian snow isn't 'real' snow - the European stuff is powdery and soft and just so beautiful).

Here's how I imagine this town looking in old sepia-toned photos...

I ♥ Switzerland.

  1. Oh don't. I have tears in my eyes. You've inspired me to post an old travel photo on my blog, too.

  2. This really is getting to be a favourite of mine, your Friday photo. I love the pics and then the story behind it is interesting too.

    Have a lovely weekend!

  3. MAkes me want to go back there too. The trouble with holiday images is the desire they cause.
I loved it there too, even though there was no snow when I visited.

  4. Gorgeous.

I visited Switzerland in 1991 and loved. I saw snow for the first time there.

    Lovely pic, Megan.
