Product Review: Johnson's Junior Range

This mop of hair, though beautiful, is the cause of many arguments in this house.

First, Abbey hates me washing it. She'll complain that the shampoo stings her eyes and that I'm, you know, touching her hair to wash it.

And she despises having her hair brushed. Every morning we have the same argument discussion. Me: "if you sit still, it won't hurt". Her: "No" and runs off. I then have to hold her down as she kicks and squirms, screaming each time the brush reaches a knot. And there are a LOT of knots in that mop of curls, let me tell you.

So when the people at Johnson's contacted me, asking if I'd like to try their Junior range, including no-tears shampoo and hair detangler... I said a big fat YES.

The big question, then, as I looked at these beautiful bottles of product, was: will they make a difference to our mornings?

And yes, they have. The last few days, I've explained the new order to Abbey: this shampoo won't sting, this spray will take the knots away. After a couple of days, she even began to believe me (because a toddler needs solid proof before believing her mother, apparently).

No more morning arguments over hair. Now, Johnson's, if you could just make a product that makes it easier for me to get her dressed...

[These products are available at supermarkets and pharmacies. I was not paid to write this post, but did receive some free products. You can be assured that I only review products here that I believe are right for me and my family, and will always give my honest opinion.]

  1. I have the same issues! the only way I can brush Miss Em's hair (without resorting to the Holding down option) is to do it quick while she is brushing her teeth! I might have ti investigate these products too! Thank you!

  2. Riley still hasn't got her proper hair yet - it's still that really fine, highly troublesome baby hair. She's also pretty sensitive to things getting in her eyes and for that the Gaia shampoo has been great as well.

  3. Oh my goodness! You just described the first two years of Bliss' life. Only recently has the whlole hair washing drama stopped being, well, a drama. It's crazy that we have to convince them to trust us - I've lost count of the number of times I've said "Bliss, when was the last time I did something to hurt you? Never!"

  4. I have two daughters (soon to be three) who loathe having their hair washed. I swear I age at least 2 years everytime it comes round to hair washing day.
They used to have panic attacks at the thought of their hair being washed...but I've kind of turned it into a "hairdressing" game with them. They sit on a special chair and get their hair washed in the sink.
It still sucks though, because the eldest has a beautiful long curly mane down to her bottom that is always riddled in knots - and the youngest loves to stick her head in the sandpit at pre-school.
Boys are so much easier! My son gets his head shaved a number 4 and that's the end of that story ;-)

  5. The detangling spray is great! My five year old is a restless sleeper and usually wakes up with her lovely long hair matted and in knots. I use the spray along with a detangling comb, and then a brush. The detangling spray is also useful for dampening hair to reduce fly-aways when putting hair into plaits or other trickier hairstyles.

You could also try a leave-in conditioner - that seems to reduce the amount of knots Miss E wakes up with.

Apparently all this product has the added benefit of discouraging nits (they can't get as good a grip on the hair shaft) which is a big plus for me with school starting this year!

Good luck with the hair brushing!

  6. My 5 year old won't let me near her hair (which is thick and waist length) unless I have the 'detangler' on hand!

And as mopsygirl says it seems to be a good nit deterent - 4.5 years of daycare, and school and we've avoided them (except when her cousins shared when she was about 12 months old and had almost no hair)!
