Me (coughing, squinting and waving my hands around wildly): "Um, are you right?"
Him: "What?"
Me: "All that smoke!"
Him: "It's a smoking zone."
Me: "Not near my daughter it isn't. Put it out."
Him (to waitress): "We're moving to that table over there, okay?"
I remember when I used to go to nightclubs and pubs - I always hated that feeling of being clogged up with smoke the next morning. And I used to whinge and complain to anyone smoking near me, and warn them that the day would come when smoking would be outlawed from those venues. No one believed me. Furthermore, they thought I was an outspoken cow who needed to have a drink and relax.
Well, it's now been outlawed from pubs and clubs, and basically anywhere inside. But outside eating areas? Still legal (here in Victoria).
And it's wrong. Why can't I sit outside with my family, enjoying a meal in the fresh air, without having to deal with clouds of smoke?
I have no tolerance for smoking. Smoke near me, and you'll hear my big commotion of coughing and spluttering and complaining.
Smoke near my daughter (or any other children with me) and you'll be told very plainly - Go Away.
I am in 100% agreement with you. I am also the huffer/complainer when I'm eating outdoors. Plus, they light up when they want...if I'm eating, the smoker's care factor is zero.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand how, when smoking is so bad for your health, it's ok for people to smoke IN PUBLIC...anywhere. I hate walking behind someone who is smoking.
I can't tolerate it anymore. My nose just gets really bad when I smell smoking. I so hate it!
ReplyDeleteLove it!! I CANNOT wait for the day smoking is banned in outdoor areas - I love that smoking is banned indoors, where you have to choose to go in or not, but it's weird that people can still smoke outdoors, where I have no choice to be subjected to their smoke or not.

Megan, I love you.
ReplyDeleteI am an ex smoker. I smoked for 27 years - a fact that I now find nearly unfathomable.
I would like smoking banned EVERYWHERE.
I can smell a lit cig a mile off and it makes me want to hurl and it makes me angry.
We were at a kids play park the other day and some random Dad was having a cigarette - I was outspoken & stroppy with him & told him to put it out.
I am the worse kind - an evangelical ex smoker.
xx
I smoked until I decided to try to get pregnant. Now, I'm just like Lucy and I get very stabby with people smoking around me or the boys. Good on you for saying so xx
ReplyDeleteGood on you!! Just as classy as mums smoking outside maternity wards or pushing prams or in a wedding dress, it's so disgusting. Love Posie
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree! Good on you for speaking up!
ReplyDeleteSmoking should be banned. The age bracket of smokers are getting younger and younger too.
ReplyDeleteI hate being around people that smoke. It is a disgusting habit. I don't need to inhale your second hand smoke.
ReplyDeleteThankfully in QLD all areas were food are served is smoke free and there are designated areas where you can smoke.
All public venues are smoke free, including stadiums and concert halls. I hate it people get away with smoking in non-smoking areas. I was at the AFL on the weekend and one dude was smoking at the back of our area which was clearly a non smoking area.
I think it should be banned!
Growing up with 2 parents who smoked everywhere including the car with the windows UP! I am totally with you on this one!
ReplyDeleteI have no tolerance for smoke either, but my problem is more with the reeking stink of old smoke that has become firmly entrenched in breath, clothing and those "green" shopping bags. I'm one of those "cough till I vomit" persons, especially if I don't have my inhaler handy.
ReplyDeleteI have zero tolerance of it. Last year as we walked along a crowded street, someone lit up and began smoking right in front of us. My son, a severe asthmatic, moved away, as we have taught him to do, but not fast enough. He had an acute attack. Which basically means he can barely breathe.
ReplyDeleteWe always carry ventolin, but why should my son's health - his basic ability to breathe - be compromised by a smoker?
I recall having an argument with an ex-colleague over this. We were talking about smoking at bars etc, and I said it should be banned. She said, "Smokers have rights too."
ReplyDeleteSeriously?
They are doing something that is *known* can kill others around them. Why *should* they have rights?
It's even banned on some beaches here in Perth which makes me so happy. I can't wait till the day smokers are relegated to smoking only in their own homes. Disgusting.
ReplyDeleteYes there's no doubt that smoking is disgusting, and potentially lethal.
ReplyDeleteBut I find your actions as related in this post quite rude.
Lets remember that smoking (as gross as it is) is still legal, and this person - although inconsiderate - was doing nothing wrong. Why could YOU not have moved tables, or moved your daughter to another side of your table where the smoke wouldn't blow her way. You were outside after all, there's lots of fresh air out there that's uncontaminated by smoke. You have treated this person with shameful rudeness and you need to develop a bit more tolerance. Do you also yell at people driving past in old cars, they too are poisoning your lungs with their emmissions.
I'm a non-smoker too and definitely not a fan of people smoking in public places - but rightfully address my energy towards those who have the power to change the laws, not those poor souls who are (legally) indulging in their horrible addiction. If they are doing it in a legally designated area, then it's the lawmakers' fault, not theirs.
