When would you...

We used to laugh and joke - 'Wonder what our kids will look like!' - because Steve and I both have brown hair and brown eyes.

We never expected this blonde haired, ever changing eye coloured girl.

Then again, we've learnt that she's full of surprises. Expect the unexpected.

Today I want to ask you a question: When would you take your daughter for her first haircut? Because that mop of hair is seriously long (halfway down her back when it's wet), yet I keep thinking, 'Just a little longer, just a little bit more'.

I think I'm just dreading the event itself. There are protests whenever I brush it, so how big a meltdown would a haircut cause?!

What age did your child have his/her first haircut?

I cut my kids' hair myself.
Miss 3 has only had her's cut twice. My 6yo boy has been to the hairdresser twice. And honestly, they didn't do any better than I do.

Abbey's hair is gorgeous...I'd wait awhile. But I love long hair. :)

I am with you, let it go, just a little longer. Don't worry, once you start you will be at the hairdresser all the time. Let it go as long as you can.

No idea. I have friends and even strangers come up to me at least twice a week and say to Tricky "oooh you look so grown up, you must've had your first haircut today!" because his fringe is dead straight. I laugh with my friends but just agree with the strangers because it's easier.

I also know two children in my circle of friends who had 3-4 haircuts before they were 1!

Abbey's hair is just gorgeous, if it was me, I'd wait a little longer, or just snip the ends off myself if they were ratty.

My Miss E has just turned three and has had a couple of haircuts (mainly for me to enjoy the fun of it more than necessity). Only in the last month have I been able to put her hair in a pony tail without a thousands clips holding bits together. Very slow growing hair!

Ask your daughter. Maybe she had some ideas of her own. :)

Ohhh she has gorgeous hair!

My big girl had a skullet until she was about 18 months, her first haircut involved her brother and a random pair of scissors :s

My little boy however has crazy thick straight hair and a generously sized noggin so has been having his head shaved since he was about 6 months old.

I'd maybe trim the ends if they need it? But spare a thought for those children with the hair that makes their parents weep, like some of mine ;p

We had ours yesterday! Though it was only the very ends off as I love my gals curls way too much =)

Olivia had her first trim when she was only about 6 months old...Lexie was a little later - about 8 months.

Both of their hair is long and curly...still.

Charlie (dead straight hair) had such a mop - I did his with a pair of nail scissors at three months...

My firstborn was almost 4 when she got her first haircut and my 2.5 yo has never had her haircut.

I know what you mean about unexpected looks, I have straight hair as does my whole family. My youngest has very curly ringlets, it's quite odd and something I never expected. My SIL and nephew look like negatives of each other she has black hair and very olive skin and her sun is very pale with almost white hair, she often gets asked if he's adopted!

Amy has dead straight dark hair, like mine. She didn't grow any until she was nearly 2 so her first haircut was just a trim. Stella on the other hand had a big mop of blonde curls which kept flopping in her face from a year old so we had to cut a fringe in. I got the experts to do it first and then I kept trimming it. We let the curls grow at the back for as long as we could because I knew they would never come back once we cut them and I was right. We chopped them all off a few weeks ago, sad but it was time to let go of the baby hair!

My little boy gets his hair trimmed by his dad about every fortnight, and he's only just turned one! At first I would freak out (true, it was too long over his ears, but elsewhere he hardly had any!) but he gets compliments after every trim and he's used to sitting still for it. AND it's not my job. Yay!

I can see why you have resisted! She has gorgeous blonde curls. I keep my third son's hair longer for the same reason :)

I reckon my kids were all about 15 months the first time. The twins, at 2 and a bit have had three I think. My daughter has thick brown hair. It looks gorgeous as a bob. She won't let me touch it so I avoided it having much length.

Good luck if you decide to go x

Buy some detangling spray and spray the hair before brushing.
I think there's one called no more tangles.

To untangle, DON'T start brushing from the scalp down, brush the ends first and gradually work your way up towards the scalp. This is much less painful than dragging tangles all the way down the length of the hair.
