I'm going on holidays tomorrow... so why isn't anything planned?

Tomorrow my little family is heading off to New Zealand for two weeks.

It's the holiday that we keep (at the risk of sounding like an idiot) forgetting. We booked the flights and the campervan - and then did nothing. In our defence, there has been a lot going on: both of us busy with work, Abbey starting preschool and, you know, a pregnancy. We've been slightly distracted.

And so it is that here we sit 24 hours before our plane leaves, still with nothing booked or planned other than those flights and the campervan.

To be honest, it's the kind of holiday we really like. We've done this on a few driving trips: Tasmania, Central Australia, and even around Switzerland and Italy. And it's fun.

Well, to be fair, it isn't fun every day - like the time in Switzerland that we couldn't find anywhere to stay so we paid $20 (bargain, we thought!) to sleep in an unheated cabin. Hint: NEVER stay anywhere unheated in Switzerland.

But they're the times that, although maybe not the most fun at the time, provide the biggest laughs when you get home. No one ever says, 'hey, remember that perfect spot we stayed where nothing really happened?' Bring on the adventures.

This holiday started as a fully planned event - we had every intention of it, anyway. But as time has gone on, it's become less about how much we do and the spots we 'have' to see, and more about having two weeks together, just the three of us with no distractions. (Awwww!)

Here we come, New Zealand, just three crazy Aussies with a start date, an end date, and the open roads everywhere in between.

See you all in April!

  1. I once stayed at a place in Ireland for $3 Aussie dollars a night.

I think I stayed awake all night wondering if I would be murdered in my sleep. The linen on the beds had been there for some time. Thank god I had my own sleeping bag and stuff. But yes, certainly a night I remember.

    Have fun!
