Everyone needs a cuddle |
My girl is in this in-between space.
"Mum, I don't need you," she insists. "I can look after myself."
She calls out to me in the middle of the night: "I'm scared... a bear is trying to eat me," she mumbles quietly, sleepily. I stroke her head and look her in the eyes, whispering "You're safe" until she lets her eyes drop again.
It strikes me that it isn't just her in this in-between. It isn't just kids.
We all want to think we can do it on our own. We want independence, space, the ultimate goal of being self-sufficient.
Then the lights go down and the softer reality eases in.
It's okay to let people look out for you. Look after you.
We all need someone to tell us we're safe.
It really isn't just kids. I am 25 years old and sometimes I still need my Mum.
ReplyDeleteI have had surgery on my collar bone and my Mum came over from Dublin to help look after me and I have really loved having her here, taking care of me.
This is me right now - i was just thinking how confident i had been when my husband announced he'd be working interstate part of each week for the next 2 months. Today is day 1 and already i was in need of a hug and reassurance today and realised he would not be coming home tonight to provide that secure feeling only his hug can give me.
