Having working parents sometimes has its benefits

My Dad was a Photographer for a while when I was a kid. I used to love going to weddings with him to help out, watching everyone all dressed up and having fun. I'd watch intently as he'd frame an image, process the film and take painstaking care fixing the colour in his photos with the tiniest paint brush (before computers and Photoshop existed).

My Mum is a Pharmacist. Going to work with her during school holidays was really all about the jelly beans.

Sometimes it sucks when your parents are working. Here, it's a bit challenging behind the scenes when I need to send emails and write articles, and sometimes meeting deadlines means locking myself in my office when Abbey would prefer me to be playing.

A magazine I write for recently asked me for a destination piece on a beach location. I wanted to do it - of course! - but wanted somewhere not too far, but also somewhere fun and worth writing about. And so it was that we ended up on the Bellarine Peninsula for two days.

Sometimes going to work with your parents is fun. How do school holidays look when your Mum is a travel writer? A little bit like this...

BIG fun at Big4 Bellarine. I'd stayed there before with a bunch of other bloggers, but nothing can compare to coming here with kids and watching my girl run around, jump, laugh and make new friends. The waterslide was the highlight of her whole weekend.

We awoke – or, rather, were awoken – early the next morning. Our children don’t seem to have heard the idea that breaks away from home require sleep-ins. Upon much insistence from Abbey, we headed to reception and hire a go-cart, and then zoomed our way around the park. And as we do, it becomes increasingly obvious that my family has missed another memo – the one where mums get sleep-ins and dads bring the kids out to play. For a moment I consider having a word to Steve about this… and then I look at my daughter, pedal faster and then faster still, and let out a big “WOOOOO” with her. We laugh, we probably wake those sleeping mums, and I’m glad I’m up and enjoying every bit of this day with my family.
